Covering plastic surfaces requires special attention due to the following four main features:
Low heat resistance
Low surface energy
Surface sensitivity to solvent
Flexibility
The low surface energy of polymers causes adhesion problems. Plastic surfaces such as polyolefins, polypropylene and polyethylene are very difficult surfaces to cover. Paints made from thermoplastic acrylics are used both as base coats and as top coats along with metallic pigments to coat plastics such as ABS, HIPS, Noryl and PC. The role of the base coat is to create an effective connection between the surface and aluminum metallic pigments in order to eliminate surface defects and achieve gloss and shine.
